It is very useful to have at hand a piece of software (or rather of whole system) that can relieve lots of the things you have to worry about in your work. Especially, when it comes to coordinating a team of people, larger than 5 people.

That was the case with Sofia Leo Club. We started the club a couple of months ago, launched the official website of the club a few ago, the ceremony for the official chartering is scheduled in a week or so (March 24). Still, we are about to start the “real” work on projects. Project whose aim to benefit the community and society we live in. The problems that might arise from such work are closely connected with the good and effective internal communication between the team members. By communication here I understand not only the sole term of “the act of transmitting messages”, rather than I understand the sharing of ideas, files, agendas, project tasks, etc.

Well, having such understanding for team communication, it was pretty obvious that I would go for some kind of ICT system to solve the problem. Such system, generically known as “groupware”, was to provide all the aspects of my understanding of communication. Also, it had to be web-based, LAMP driven.
I first started with installing phpGroupWare, an excellent groupware suite, but there many drawbacks to it. First and foremost – way too large (file size). The core installation, with no add-ons was something like 40Mb! So obviously this was turned down for hosting space reasons.

Secondly I tested the dotProject. This was my favorite for some time. Very good system, though very difficult to hack and customize (I had some major problems with making it work with Cyrilic). Anyway, this we actually did use it for some time and it turned to work well. However, the users were most of the times confused with the interface and most of them were doing all kind of mistakes that later the admin (i.e. me) had to fix. So I turned down this groupware for “not being very user-friendly”.

Finally, I ran into more.groupware. This is my favorite now and this is the system that was implemented and that we are currently using. It turned out to be quite rigid framework to work with, the interface is very nicely, user-friendly done. The system provides all kind of export features (I was especially glad for the contacts module export function because contacts in club work are vital). Also, from the three systems, more.groupware so far was the most developed system (the latest release was from last week or something like that).

So if you, the organization you are working with or someone else needs a system to gather its resouces around, aiming at a more effectient workflow, consider the above groupware-s. Good luck!

Today, in the morning as I was having my coffee and was browsing through the rss feeds, I came across this article by Tim O’Reilly on What is Web 2.0?

It made think about the development of the web that we are currently witnessing every single day of Internet use. The fact that I’m reading my news mostly in rss format speaks for itself. Also, the services of Web 2.0 companies that I’m using – gmail, shutterbook, 30boxes, or even WP – the platform that is behind this blog, are part of my daily routine. And I’m sure that more and more Bulgarians are like me.

The recent blog seminar that I attended last week made me realize how new technologies are slowly coming to my homeland. And also, how slow people here are in adopting these technologies (I’m not speaking of the “early adopters”, but of the “regular users”). I just wonder when the big AJAX, Web 2.0 .bg boom will happen?

Yesterday I attended a blogshop – a seminar/workshop, organized by Netage and Orbitel, focused on weblogs. The main purpose of the event was to elaborate a bit on what a good blog writing is (presentation by Elenko Elenkov – eenk.com), what a successful blog is (presentation by Vlado “Kaladan” Petkov – Interspace) and working on improving on a specific blog (presentation and workshop by Jack – Valeria Angelova from Orbitel).

It was quite interesting for me for a couple of reasons. First, I’ve been bloging for some three years now, but Elenko’s presentation and general overview on how a blog has to be written by the rules of good writing definitely made me rethink all my writing and blog posting. Secondly, as I met quite a few people, bloggers to say, the way people write and the problems they face are same, if not identical to the problems I’ve faced in the past. For instance, I found out that many people (including Vlado and Elenko) have shut the comments sections of their blogs on purpose to save some frustration or some nerves trying to handle trolls that just scavenge the web, trying to argue with someone. Well, I’ve done that almost six months ago, and since that I have had some serious thoughts on re-opening my blog comments again, but speaking with other bloggers at the workshop made me go back to the position that comments are to remain closed for now.

The workshop’s practical part was brainstorming over an almost new corporate blog for one of Orbitel’s services – 01001. Corporate blogs are now common in the U.S. and sometimes, like with the Boeing blog, but in Bulgaria they are yet to come. I might say that Orbitel’s attempt for corporate blogging may be not very successful, for definitely it’s the first one in Bulgaria I’ve known of. The trend, as many of the bloggers projected, is to come in year and a half or two, but we can oversee it now.

Anyhow, this blogshop was quite instrumental for me because starting from this post on (this sound almost like a later new year’s resolution), I will be trying to gradually and as much as I can, to boost the quality of my writing in this blog. This means that the average length of my posts will most probably increase at the expense of the frequency of publishing!

Developed by my friend Alek, I think that there is quite a potential in this site. Well, enough with the words – go wanting there!
